An event we’ve been waiting for since we attended last years SVC wayzgoose! This is one great time!
It features a Steamroller Smackdown, Marketplace, Demos and an Equipment Swap.
To Start…We hit up the Equipment Swap first to pick up some “tools of the trade”.
And on to the SMACKDOWN!!!
At the end of the day, KeeganMeegan & Co, and this incredible cut, came out Smackdown CHAMPIONS!
Every print of the day was hung from each of SVC’s 4 stories. A silent auction was held for each print.
Everyone had the opportunity to print their own keepsake on one of SVC’s Vandercooks. Catherine took a swing at this one – Nice job!
This event is a MUST for any Letterpress Printer or Enthusiast in the area. Can’t wait for next year!
New Press. Wine. Wayzgoose.
The latest trip south of the 49th was pretty great!
The reason for the trip was to visit the King’s Books 8th annual Wayzgoose, a letterpress printers festival in Tacoma, WA. This was the first time we have visited the event. It was also a good excuse to pick up an old proof press I had secured a few weeks back as well as few other needed supplies – The art supply stores in the States, such as Daniel Smith and Blick are GREAT and almost always have what you need. So much for “Buy Local” but it is the closest stock we can find sometimes:(
Saturday morning we made a trip into Issaquah, WA to pick up the proof press from a gentleman located on Tiger Mountain.
The press is, from what I gather, a late 1800′s Challenge proof press. The following pictures are of the press after it arrived back home in our shop. Nick-named “The Lead Sled”, it’s cast iron and weighs in at: “sled” = 125lbs, “Roller” = 152lbs, Total = 277lbs. It will be great for those oversized linocut prints I have in mind! Even the kids have taken a liking to it (our Boston Terrier “Boo” & French Bulldog “Stitch”) – they’re ready to roll!
To carry on with the trip…It was an unbelievably beautiful day, and because of that, we decided to lollygag a bit, stopping at a few garage sales and stumbling upon a winery and tasting room – we couldn’t pass it up!
Twin Cedars is a winery located on Tiger Mountain to the South of Downtown Issaquah. We were warmly greeted by proprietors Rod and Dona and lead to their beautiful tasting room located on their property. They procure exceptional grapes grown in Washington State’s premier appellations and vineyards and make fabulous handcrafted wines. We had the pleasure of tasting their current releases: 2009 CABERNET SAUVIGNON, 2009 MERLOT, 2009 SYRAH and the 2011 ORANGE MUSCAT. The Cabernet and the Muscat were our personal favorites and didn’t think twice about taking some home to enjoy!
Sunday morning…off to the WAYZGOOSE in Tacoma!
King’s Books is located at 218 St Helens Ave Tacoma, WA and has hosted this event every year for the past 8. It’s a great time! Complete with STEAMROLLER printing and activities including screen printing, paper making and printing your own keepsake poster – courtesy of Beautiful Angle. LOTS of our favorite Printer’s were there like Constellation & Co, Keegan Wenkman of Keeganmeegan & Co (the print we bought will soon be hanging in our shop – AWSOME!), Chandler O’Leary of Anagram Press and MANY more! We also had the chance to meet Kyle Durrie who runs Power and Light Press in Portland as well as Moveable Type – a 22′ 1982 Chevy stepvan that has been transformed into a functional mobile letterpress studio (which was at the Wayzgoose!), that for the last 10 months Kyle had been teaching and touring in all across the country!
All-in-all, a GREAT road trip and an AWSOME weekend. We can’t wait for another!
